The Alliance for Coffee Excellence (ACE) has announced Alex Pond as its Education and Lab Coordinator. “We look forward to Alex’s experience and passion for coffee to help us build this global program along with our event outreach and HQ lab development,” the ACE says in a press statement. “We currently have one instructor, Danny Pang, in Singapore and we hope that Alex will not only coordinate the efforts on our courses, but also become an instructor for the program.” At ACE, Pond will be responsible for coordinating and driving Sensory Educational Training, formally known as the Cupper Camp program. Sensory Educational Training allows ACE to share Cup of Excellence knowledge with those who want to improve their businesses. ACE members, non-members, roasters, and retailers with cupping experience are invited to attend the four-day intensive training courses. ACE says the sensory education events are a great opportunity to improve sensory skills and evaluate coffee with greater accuracy, consistency, and confidence, while also building relationships among fellow members of the global coffee community. Attendees will learn how to identify various aspects of quality in the cup such as clean, sweet, balance, acidity, and mouthfeel. Tasters will be able to define quality both verbally and through appropriate consistent scoring. Pond has been in the coffee industry for over a decade and recently managed the training team at Heart Coffee Roaster in Portland, United States. He was also on Heart’s buying and quality control teams. Prior to that, Pond worked for a number of years at the café Fresh Pot. He had a fellowship in 2010 with Portland based Sustainable Harvest coffee importers. For more information, visit allianceforcoffeeexcellence.org/sensory-educational-training/
