Goglio’s smart packaging solutions

As the demand for high quality coffee grows ever stronger, so too has the understanding that freshness is a key factor in achieving that quality. undefined

One of the most important contributors to maintaining freshness in today’s globalised coffee industry is the design of strong, effective and fit-for-purpose packaging solutions.

As one of the world’s leading manufacturers of flexible packaging, equipment and plastic components, Italian company Goglio understands better than most that with this growth in demand also comes an increase in the standard expected by the market.

That is why Goglio, founded in 1850 and with headquarters in Varese, just outside Milan, has made it its mission to anticipate market needs through innovative solutions capable of satisfying ever-evolving customer demands.

“At the heart of our offering is the Fres-co System, a trademark defining the company business model,” Goglio’s Product Manager for Coffee, Elena Demo, tells Global Coffee Report. “High barrier flexible laminates, plastic components, such as degassing valves and capsules, equipment and service together constitute the complete Goglio packaging system.”

Goglio today is a global company with 10 production plants, seven commercial offices in Europe, the Americas and Asia, 1600 employees and an annual turnover of almost US$450 million. While it creates products and solutions for a wide variety of industries including food, pet food, detergents and cosmetics, as well as industrial, chemical and pharmaceutical products, coffee is at the heart of the company’s business, with the coffee market representing 60 per cent of Goglio’s annual turnover.

Goglio products are today a benchmark for quality in the coffee packaging industry worldwide, synonymous with high quality, best performances and innovation in packaging materials, degassing valves and in packaging equipment, Demo says. “Goglio contributes to the pleasure of drinking a good cup of coffee through its packaging system, which maintains and enhances the value of the natural aromas of the beans.”

Goglio offers a complete system for coffee packing, from laminates in reels or pre-made bags, through to equipment and one-way degassing valves. In fact, the original valves for coffee packaging were first conceived and patented by Goglio in the 1960s.

Packaging solutions range from the most simple and traditional to the more refined and innovative, thus including specific solutions designed for packaging single-dose or multi-dose pods and capsules. Goglio can give a full service and technical assistance both through research and development laboratories, machinery technicians, laminates specialists and a food and care team to conduct shelf life and product preservation studies.

Goglio coffee capsulesGoglio is poised to launch its new range of capsules at Host 2017. “These have been developed to respond to the various requests of our customers: medium barrier, high barrier, compostable and the brand new barrier compostable capsule,” Demo says.

The new release barrier compostable capsule comes from the deep know-how in the injection molding and flexible laminates technology.
Able to be used in all Nespresso-format machines, the capsule is made of compostable certified materials and is in the process of being certified for compostability.

The capsule is made of bio-compound material, while the top and bottom lids are made of multilayer high barrier material.

It stands out for its high barrier level to oxygen and it represents a great innovation in the coffee capsules world, as it integrates compostable characteristics with the traditional quality and barrier offered by Goglio.

A secondary package is still recommended, as single or multiple bags in high barrier multilayer laminates are useful to extend the product shelf life. The secondary package can be also compostable and can feature the well-known degassing valve, a must-have accessory for pack ground coffee.

Goglio’s offer for the capsule market is furthermore completed by laminates suitable as top lid, from the traditional aluminium with heat sealing lacquer up to four-ply laminates, by a complete range of capsule filling lines and, of course, solutions for the secondary packaging.

Goglio was recently awarded in the category “Smart Machines” of the 2017 edition of the Rockwell Automation-sponsored contest “Best Future Machine Awards” for its capsule filling lines.

The Award ceremony took place during Interpack in Düsseldorf (4-10 May) at the booth of Rockwell Automation in the presence of jury members, representatives of leading companies and trade associations such as Johnson & Johnson, Kimberley Clark, Nestlé, Procter and Gamble Co., The French Packaging & Processing Machinery Trade Association, and Union of Italian manufacturers of automatic packing and Packaging Machinery.

The machines registered in the contest, divided into the categories “Ease of Use”, “Modular Machines”, “Smart Machines”, “Sustainability” and “Traceability” all integrated Rockwell Automation solutions or components and participants had the opportunity to present their own technology, design skills and vision of future development.

Goglio designed the GCap6 automation system by carefully selecting solutions and control systems and choosing a particularly user-friendly programming environment. Furthermore, the reduction of installation and start-up training time, easier identification of problems, testing and validation are some of the advantages that characterise GCap6.

All devices are connected via Ethernet to facilitate communication within the control network. The machine can also be accessed remotely and production data – such as recipes, batch numbers and production quantities – can be sent directly to the machine. The customer can potentially collect an unlimited number of parameters and analogue/digital data that can be used to implement predictive maintenance.

All the collected information is a precious and necessary resource in terms of Industry 4.0 and the Goglio Machine Division has already developed a considerable experience on this issue and is able to offer this service together with the machine.

The GCap6 is an ergonomic, noiseless, safe and flexible solution.

The GCap6 also produces excellent dosages and closures and uses a very precise control system, reaching an overall equipment effectiveness of 95 per cent, guaranteeing high performance.

“Goglio is proud to have gained this recognition as evidence of the commitment and professionalism in producing and trading packaging lines,” Demo says. “Our team of experts has made this possible, working on such a highly technological project and solution.”

To complete the offer, in order to give customers all they need to have a successful product on the market, Goglio also has a wide range of secondary customised packaging solutions, made of traditional or innovative laminates such as plastic, aluminium-free laminates with optimal oxygen and moisture barriers, comparable to that granted by laminates with aluminium foil or metallisation or laminates coming from renewable sources with compostable properties.

The move towards capsules is in keeping with an overarching trend towards viewing coffee as a lifestyle product, thus driving the demand for higher quality.

“Starting from this new point of view, it’s clear that also the role of the packaging has changed, looking to new materials, printing effects, different sizes, shapes, reclosing systems and everything could help to improve the appeal of the product and help it to stand out on shelves,” Demo says.

“In tandem with that, however, is the growing desire among consumers for a more sustainable product, which is shared by the industry more broadly. This is a driving force for Goglio.”

In the future, Goglio intends to sharpen its focus of resources optimisation, both from the economic and environmental point of view. And this will lead to new challenges for the packaging industry in order to find solutions to grant at the same time cost saving, respect for the environment and the best product preservation.

“Goglio has always been a landmark in packaging for the coffee market in the roasted and ground coffee segment and first with the Goglio capsule and now with the new capsule line range, we are ready to strengthen once more our leadership in the coffee market,” Demo says. GCR
