Former Starbucks Chairman and CEO Howard Schultz has announced the title of his second book, From the Ground Up: A Journey to Reimagine the Promise of America, to be released February 2019. “The book weaves together two stories,” Schultz says in an open letter. “The first is a very personal look at my childhood growing up in the housing projects of Brooklyn, and the experiences — many of which I’ve never revealed — that drove me to build a different kind of company, one that my own dad, a working-class labourer, never had a chance to work for. “The second story is about my journey to challenge the preconceived limits of corporate responsibility, and the lessons I learned as Starbucks tackled big issues like college debt, healthcare and racial bias in unconventional ways.” Schultz stepped down as the Executive Chairman and Member of the Board of Directors of Starbucks in June. During his four decades as CEO and Chairman, Schultz grew Starbucks from 11 stores to more than 28,000 stores in 77 countries, while demonstrating that a business can simultaneously deliver best-in-class financial performance and share success with its people and the communities it serves. Following his transition off the Starbucks board, Schultz oversaw the opening of the Starbucks Reserve Roastery in Milan on 6 September. He will oversee the opening of the New York Roastery in late October. From the Ground Up is available for pre-order from Amazon, Apple, Barnes & Noble, and GooglePlay.
