Italian coffee giant Lavazza has released its global 2019 Sustainability Report, outlining key achievements, goals, and results.

As a world-renowned leader in the coffee industry, Lavazza says it commits to not only operating responsibly in all aspects of business, but also contributing to the sustainable development goals that are related to environmental sustainability worldwide – especially caring about the communities where coffee beans are grown.

In the past year, Lavazza’s Italian, French, and Canadian plants have been powered by 100 per cent renewable energy sources. In addition to this, Nuvola – Lavazza’s headquarters in Turin, Italy – reduced its power consumption by 8 per cent in comparison to 2018.

Lavazza has carried out a variety of measures to combat climate change including extensive reforestation projects. In 2019, there were 29,000 trees planted in Ethiopia, more than one-million coffee trees planted in Colombia, and 36,000 hectares of Amazon rainforest conserved and reforested in Peru.

In order to raise awareness of environmental sustainability among its employees, Lavazza has provided the Corporate Carpooling Program, which promotes sustainable mobility for home-to-work journeys by encouraging the sharing of vehicles among colleagues in a more efficient way, thus reducing emissions.

This program has helped save 4423 kilograms of CO₂ and reduce indirect emissions by 30 per cent in a year.

Lavazza has also invited a large number of graduates to join the company – cementing its leading position in the industry as a brand with strong social responsibility, innovative workplaces, and sense of employee care. This led to Lavazza being awarded Italy’s Top Employer in 2019.

Social responsibility has been rooted in the corporate culture of Lavazza since the brand was founded in 1895. Adhering to the group’s core value of responsibility, Lavazza has published an annual Sustainability Report every year since 2014 to showcase its new achievements in sustainable development.

Lavazza says it harbours great responsibility to play a role in improving climate, economic, and social issues and building connections with people around the world by operating global business conscientiously while continuing to carve the way of sustainable development.
