Swedish coffee roaster Löfbergs and horticultural company Weibulls have developed Coffee Soil, a peat-free potting mix made with upcycled coffee beans.

Since 2021, Löfbergs and Evergreen Garden Care – Weibulls’ parent company – have worked together to develop a circular solution for coffee waste. Instead of being discarded, coffee beans that don’t meet Löfbergs’ quality standards are composted and transformed into nutrient-rich soil.

In 2024, Löfbergs estimates that 106 tonnes of coffee waste was used to produce Coffee Soil.

“We have reduced our production waste to just 0.32 per cent, and this project is a great example of how leftovers can be put to good use in a smart and circular way. We hope more coffee roasters will join us in minimising industry waste,” says Anders Thorén, Head of Corporate Communications at Löfbergs.

Peatlands store vast amounts of carbon, making peat extraction a significant environmental concern due to the release of large amounts of carbon dioxide. Evergreen Garden Care is dedicated to finding sustainable alternatives and coffee waste has shown to be an effective option. Coffee Soil is now available in selected retailers and online.

Löfbergs was founded in 1906 in Karlstad and is now one of the largest family-owned coffee roasteries in the Nordics. The company began exporting coffee in 1993 and today sells every second cup outside Sweden. Löfbergs has subsidiaries in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and the United Kingdom.
