McDonald’s is taking its McCafé brand out into the wider world in 2018 with the launch of a line of ready-to-drink frappes in the US. The drink is being produced in partnership with soft drinks goliath, Coca-Cola. This is McDonald’s first foray into the ready-to-drink (RTD) coffee market in the US, which is estimated to be worth US$2 billion annually. Starbucks is the current leader in the US RTD market, with a line of coffee drinks it makes in partnership with Pepsi. Dunkin’ Donuts also launched a product in this category earlier this year, setting the scene for some fierce competition between some of the food and beverage industry’s leading heavyweights. The frappes will join McDonald’s other retail coffee offerings, which include whole bean, ground and single-serve coffee products.
