McDonald’s has announced its intention to purchase 100 per cent of its coffee from certified sustainable sources by 2020. Responding to a growing preoccupation among consumers about where their food is coming from, the world’s largest restaurant chain has pledged to focus on sourcing sustainable coffee from now on. McDonald’s sourced just 37 per cent of its coffee from certified sustainable sources in 2015. This latest push comes after the company has announced its intention to only use cage-free eggs and remove artificial preservatives from its chicken nuggets. The company has said that the move is about trying to safeguard the future supply of coffee in the face of changing climatic conditions, as well as addressing consumer concerns. Conservation International has also helped the world’s largest coffee retailer, Starbucks, to develop sustainable sourcing practices.
