The world’s largest coffee company has doubled down on its embrace of Third Wave coffee with the purchase on the leading US organic cold-brew brand, Chameleon. Nestlé made headlines in September with the purchase of Californian specialty coffee roaster Blue Bottle Coffee. This came at the same time as the company adopted a shift in messaging for its leading single-serve brand, Nespresso, to focus on the stories of the coffee producers. These moves are being interpreted as a response to the rapid growth of the world’s second-largest coffee company, Jacobs Douwe Egberts, which has been on an extensive acquisition drive over the past few years, snapping up high-end roasters such as Stumptown and Peet’s, as well as more mainstream brands such as Krispy Kreme.
