Pret A Manger has announced its third pay rise in 12 months for its almost 8000 United Kingdom shop staff.

From 1 April 2023, team members, baristas and managers will receive an additional 3 per cent pay increase, on top of the 5 per cent increase that came into force in December 2022.

The pay increase will see the average base pay for shop staff increase by 19 per cent in the year to April, exceeding the United Kingdom rate of inflation. This third pay rise means the majority of Pret staff will earn well above the United Kingdom National Living Wage of US$14.23. The latest pay increase will be applied to shop employees irrespective of age.

“We’re proud to be making another significant investment in our people’s success and wellbeing. Whether it’s paying above the National Minimum Wage, providing career development opportunities, or leading the industry on Barista pay, we’re committed to making Pret a rewarding and supportive place to work for all our teams and paying the best we can afford to,” says Guy Meakin, Interim Managing Director at Pret A Manger United Kingdom and Ireland.

In addition to the pay rise, Pret A Manger has also launched a new discounts portal to help shop staff access fresh food and other essential items at a lower cost. The new portal builds on Pret’s existing benefits package, which includes free food and drink while on shift and a 50 per cent discount for all staff.

As part of Pret’s ambitious growth strategy, announced in 2021, the company is planning to open more than 200 new UK shops by 2023 and double the size of the business within five years. This latest investment in its people will support its growth plans and the company’s commitment to creating a rewarding and supportive work environment for its staff.
