Howard Schultz, Founder and Chairman Emeritus of Starbucks, will begin a tour around the United States on 28 January to promote his new book, From the Ground Up, to be released in February. “I'll be in many cities talking about the book, my childhood, and sharing thoughts about the changing roles of leadership, business and citizenship in America,” Schultz said in an open letter. Schultz says From the Ground Up: A Journey to Reimagine the Promise of America weaves together two stories. “The first is a very personal look at my childhood growing up in the housing projects of Brooklyn, and the experiences — many of which I’ve never revealed — that drove me to build a different kind of company, one that my own dad, a working-class labourer, never had a chance to work for,” he says. “The second story is about my journey to challenge the preconceived limits of corporate responsibility, and the lessons I learned as Starbucks tackled big issues like college debt, healthcare and racial bias in unconventional ways.” Confirmed stops and dates of the tour include:
• Barnes & Noble Union Square in New York of 28 January
• JCCSF in San Francisco, California on 1 February
• Chicago Ideas at Venue610 in Illinois on 4 February
• Brattle Theatre in Boston, Massachusetts on 5 February
• Philadelphia Free Library in Pennsylvania on 13 February
• Sixth & I in Washington, DC, on 14 February
• Commonwealth Club in San Francisco on 19 February
• Moss Theatre in Santa Monica, California on 21 February
• The Cuyahoga Library in Cleveland, Ohio on 27 February
• The Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum in Atlanta, Georgia on 11 March Schultz stepped down as the Executive Chairman and Member of the Board of Directors of Starbucks in June, 2018. During his four decades with the company, Schultz grew Starbucks from 11 stores to more than 28,000 stores in 77 countries, while demonstrating that a business can simultaneously deliver best-in-class financial performance and share success with its people and the communities it serves. Following his transition off the Starbucks board, Schultz oversaw the opening of the Starbucks Reserve Roasteries in Milan in September, and New York in October. From the Ground Up is available for pre-order from Amazon, Apple, Barnes & Noble, and GooglePlay. For more information, visit howardschultz.com Image credit: Starbucks
