The Starbucks Foundation has announced it will donate US$150,000 to the American Red Cross to assist with relief efforts in Nepal. “We are deeply saddened by the devastation caused by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Nepal, which has affected more than eight million people,” said Starbucks. “Our thoughts remain with those impacted by this tragic event.” On Wednesday, four days after the earthquake hit Nepal, the death toll had risen to above 5200 people. While Starbucks doesn’t have a business presence in Nepal, The Tata Group, its business partner in India, is working with the Indian Government to support humanitarian relief. The American Red Cross has committed an initial million dollars to the relief operation. Additionally, eight American Red Cross disaster specialists are on their way to Nepal to support through emergency relief, cash transfer programming, information management, recovery planning and IT/telecoms.
