Ueshima Coffee Co has announced a partnership with Boku to allow customers to pay for their coffees with their phones. Customers of the Japanese chain, which is part of the UCC Group, can use a phone app or go online to upload money to a loyalty card and use it in place of cash. “Given the preferences of Japanese consumers to use credit card alternatives for many purchases, we expect Ueshima customers to take full advantage of carrier billing through Boku,” said Hiroshi Yoda, Boku’s Country Manager of Japan. The initial launch of carrier billing through Boku will cover more than 450 Ueshima coffee shops across Japan, with plans to expand into new global markets in the coming months.
