More than 350 senior executives from across the coffee and food-to-go sectors gathered for a night of industry celebration at the European Coffee awards in Paris on 27 November. Costa Coffee were awarded in three categories ‘Best Coffee Chain – Southern Europe’, ‘Best Coffee Chain – UK & Ireland’ as well as the coveted ‘Best Coffee Chain – Europe’ award. Seven individual awards were given out to people identified for their Outstanding Contribution to the Coffee Industry in their country or across Europe. These were: Nicolas Riché, CEO of Columbus Café; Andrew Tolley, Co-Founder, Harris + Hoole; Peter Van Eijl, Founder, Dopio Espresso; Jonathan Teoh, Founder, Dopio Espresso; Johan Damgaard, CEO, Johan & Nystöm; Nana Holthaus-Vehse, CEO Barista World and Steve Leighton, Managing Director, Has Bean Coffee.
The awards culminated with the Lifetime Achievement Award, handed to Piero Bambi, Technical and Design Director of Italian artisan espresso machine maker La Marzocco. In his acceptance speech, Piero reflected on his 60 years in the coffee industry and his legacy at the renowned company. Companies and individual award winners were recognised through a targeted voting campaign run by organisers, Allegra Strategies, from July to October 2013, in which more than 1000 senior industry executives took part.
