La Marzocco has announced it is contributing to the emerging specialty coffee movement in Spain, with the opening of a Barcelona office, on 6 O undefined

ctober.

According to La Marzocco, although Spaniards have been consuming espresso-based drinks for decades, Spain's role in the specialty coffee industry was only launched in 2006 when the first Spanish Barista Championship was held. The championship has played an important role in demanding quality coffee and establishing the Barista as a profession in Spain.

“The new baristas and coffee professionals who got their start in 2006 have gradually introduced micro-roasters and specialised cafés,” said La Marzocco. “These young professionals, with their entrepreneurial spirit, have also begun to educate the local consumer, aiming to show that coffee, like wine, should be savoured.”

The Italian espresso machine manufacturer is collaborating with its partner, Elisabet Sereno to open the office.

A native of Barcelona, Sereno is a member of the Cup of Excellence Jury, a Specialty Coffee Association of Europe Authorised Trainer and, in 2009, a World Barista Championship Certified Sensory Judge. She established the Barista Academy in Spain in 2010, and became La Marzocco's authorised distributor in Spain in 2013.
