Sustainable initiative coffee&climate (c&c) welcomes specialty green coffee trader Walter Matter as its newest member.

Walter Matter has been a coffee and cocoa beans merchant for more than 100 years, with c&c saying it has always had the wellbeing of its farming communities at its heart.

With a holistic approach, Walter Matter aims to preserve the environment through adopting agricultural practices while contributing to both social and economic progress.

“It is our role to support coffee smallholders and build a more sustainable and resilient coffee value chain together,” says Nicolas Matter, CEO of Walter Matter.

“We strongly believe that partnerships are key to bring long-term solutions to the industry. Joining forces will allow us to mutualize knowledge to deliver the most positive outcome to the communities.”

Walter Matter joins the likes of Joh Johannson Kaffe, Lavazza Group, Löfbergs, Tchibo, among other prominent coffee businesses in the alliance.

Active for more than 10 years, c&c seeks to create networks with private and public partners from across the coffee industry, focusing on the issue of climate change in coffee production.

According to c&c, its members not only benefit from knowledge on climate-smart agriculture, but are also able to contribute their know-how, adding to the continuous development and expansion of climate knowledge. C&c believes this close collaboration is the key to achieving climate-resilient, coffee-based livelihoods and establishing healthy coffee landscapes.

“The overall goal is more resilient coffee supply chains and ultimately, improving smallholder coffee farming families’ livelihoods,” says c&c.

Implemented by the Hanns R Neumann Stiftung (HRNS) foundation, c&c encourages all partners, from roasting and trading companies to farmer organisations to join.

“With Walter Matter, an important player from the private sector joins c&c. Rooted in our program regions, Walter Matter is a key link to farmer organizations and beneficiaries,” says Stefan Ruge, c&c Program Manager.

“Welcoming new members gives us the opportunity to extend our pro-active and collaborative cooperation.”
