Ethiopia records new coffee export record

Ethiopia has achieved a historic coffee milestone, recording unprecedented revenue within the first nine months of the current Ethiopian fiscal year.

Ethiopia has recorded US$1.5 billion in revenue for the first time, surpassing the total annual revenue recorded in any previous year.

The achievement was announced by H.E. Dr Adugna Debela, Director General of the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority, during a press briefing on 15 April held for both public and private media outlets.

According to Dr Adugna, Ethiopia exported 299,607 tons of coffee in the past nine months, achieving 148 per cent of the initial target of 201,959 tons. In terms of revenue, the country generated US$1.508 billion, surpassing the planned US$1.094 billion by 38 per cent.

This marks an increase of 125,011 tons (72 per cent) in volume and $672.44 million (81 per cent) in revenue compared to the same period in the last fiscal year.

During the briefing, Dr Debela disclosed the top export destinations for Ethiopian coffee in the first nine months. The top export destinations were:

  • Saudi Arabia imported 53,844 tons (18 per cent), generating US$250 million (21 per cent) in revenue.
  • Germany followed with 51,107 tons (17 per cent), generating $232.5 million (20 per cent).
  • The United States imported 23,344 tons (8 per cent), generating $152.2 million (13 per cent).
  • Additional key markets included Belgium, China, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, Japan, Italy, and Jordan.

Dr Debela concluded the press briefing by reaffirming the Authority’s commitment to bolstering the coffee sector’s global competitiveness via strategic interventions in production, quality control, and market diversification.
