For the first time ever, the top two Honduran coffees from Cup of Excellence will be served in Honduras following the 2025 Cup of Excellence Honduras Auction.
Spirit Animal Coffee has acquired both the first-place Parainema (88.65 points, Jeniffer Madrid) and second-placed Geisha (91.59 points, Mario Leiva), and will roast them at origin to serve them locally.
It is the first time in any Cup of Excellence auction around the world that a coffee company based in the producing country has purchased both the first- and second-place lots.
Managing Director of the Cup of Excellence Gary Urrutia says moves like this redefine the global coffee value chain.
“This is a powerful moment for Honduras,” he says. “For the first time, people in Honduras will be able to experience the absolute best of their own coffee.
“Coffees of this calibre are usually exported and never tasted locally. Keeping them here is a turning point for how coffee-producing countries reclaim pride, ownership, and recognition in the global market.”
The two micro-lots will be featured in select Omakase tasting experiences at the Spirit Animal Coffee Roatán location and will also be released in limited quantities on the roaster’s website.
According to the United States Department of Agriculture, Honduras is the eighth-largest producer of coffee in the world with a total of 5.52 million 60-kilogram bags produced in 2024/25.
This means the Central American nation accounts for approximately three per cent of the world’s total coffee harvest.
