Honduras has signed the International Coffee Agreement 2022 at the International Coffee Organization (ICO) headquarters in London, United Kingdom, reinforcing its commitment to the global supply chain.

The International Coffee Agreement 2022 emphasises the importance of sustainable coffee production and consumption, improving farmer livelihoods, and focusing on climate change.

The agreement was signed by Ambassador Eduardo Enrique Reina, the Secretary of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Honduras, alongside Ambassador Iván Romero-Martínez, the Permanent Representative of Honduras to the ICO.

The signing of the ICA 2022 is said to reinforce Honduras’ commitment to facilitating dialogue between coffee-exporting and importing countries, as well as the private sector, with the aim of achieving a more sustainable and prosperous future for all involved in the coffee value chain.

Honduras is the fourth-largest producer of Arabica coffee globally and the leading coffee exporter in the Central American and Mexican region. In 2023, the country exported coffee worth more than US$1.5 billion, accounting for nearly 12 per cent of its total merchandise exports.

In addition to signing the agreement, Ambassador Reina announced Honduras’ intention to host the 140th Session of the International Coffee Council (ICC) in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, from 22 to 26 September 2025. The event will bring together global coffee leaders and offer an opportunity to explore the country’s coffee industry.

“We are deeply privileged to welcome Honduras as a signatory of the ICA 2022. In the spirit of international cooperation, we celebrate the diversity of coffee traditions and commit ourselves to safeguarding, promoting, and sustaining the sector,” says ICO’s Head of Operations, Gerardo Patacconi.

“We are confident that collaboration through the ICO will help mobilise additional resources and funding, address the needs of Honduran producers, and engage consumers worldwide in appreciating the richness of Honduran coffee, its environmental stewardship, and its sustainable production practices.”
