Swedish coffee group Löfbergs has moved towards packing all its whole beans in mono-material – a packaging made from a single type of plastic that is fully recyclable.
Traditional coffee bags are multi-layered with different materials – including aluminium – that must be separated prior to recycling.
Löfbergs operates in 10 core European markets and produced enough coffee to craft 12 million cups per day,
Head of Development and Compliance at Löfbergs, Madelene Breiling, says the transition of whole bean packaging to mono-material is an important step in the company offering the packaging in all formats.
“By using mono-material, we make it easier to recycle our packaging, and we have managed to develop a solution that preserves the quality of the coffee,” says Breiling.
“This is an important part of our work to create a more sustainable supply chain.”
Löfbergs is one of the world’s largest purchasers of certified Fairtrade and organic coffee.
