Panama-based organic producer Longboard Specialty Coffee held its first private auction on 1 October, breaking the record for the highest average price in a coffee auction.
Hosted by M-Cultivo, the one-day Into The Mist event saw Longboard’s Panama Geisha lots sell for an average of US$4668 per kilogram. The top-selling lot fetched a price of more than US$10,000 per kilogram.
The event was held shortly after the passing of Longboard Founder Justin Boudeman.
“We are humbled with the results and grateful for the outpouring of support for our coffees,” says Noemi Montenegro, Longboard Coffees Operations Director.
“Through this auction, our friends and partners around the world have not only honoured Justin’s life’s work, but also celebrated the coffees that embody his vision: rare, expressive lots crafted with patience, artistry, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.”
According to the company, Boudeman was a lifelong conservationist and visionary producer in the mountains of Boquete, Panama, and had always dreamed of hosting a private auction to showcase the culmination of his unique farming and processing philosophy.
“We’re thrilled that this was an overwhelmingly successful auction for Longboard,” says David Paparelli, M-Cultivo CEO.
“While we mourn Justin’s loss, this record-breaking result confirms the genius of his work.”
The record-breaking auction is the latest in a line of successful events. In August, the Best of Panama auction set a world-record price of US$30,204 per kilogram.
