The first pan-African coffee centre, the African Coffee Hub, has been launched at the Tangiers Med port complex at the northern point of Morocco, in the hopes of positioning the North African nation as the global gateway for coffee exports to Europe, the United States (US), and Asia.
Under this new system, more links of the coffee value chain will take place in Africa, with buying, consolidation, quality control, and export preparation all set to take place in Morocco.
Coffee will be sourced directly from African producers, processed at Tangiers Med, and then dispatched from the port around the world.
The new hub will target coffee production hubs across the continent including Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, and Tanzania, and is planning on announcing its first agreements with African coffee-producing countries in the coming weeks.
African Coffee Hub CEO Sanaa Ben Abdelkhaleq says the Hub’s core objective is to place more power in the hands of coffee producers.
“Our goal is to enable African coffee to reach the entire world without intermediaries, while guaranteeing its quality, traceability, and fair compensation for producers.
“The port of Tangiers Med represents the ideal location to lead this revolution.”
Tangiers Med is positioned at the northwestern tip of Africa and forms part of the southern coast of the Strait of Gibraltar, and is the largest port in North Africa.
