The Spring 2025 National Coffee Data Trends (NCDT) report has revealed coffee as the most consumed beverage in the United States (US), overtaking bottled water.

According to the NCDT report, two-thirds (66 per cent) of American adults drink coffee every day. This is higher than past-day consumption of tea, juice, soda, and bottled water, and up nearly seven per cent compared to 2020.

The report also highlighted that on average, American coffee drinks consume three cups of coffee per day.

The NCDT report, conducted in January 2025 by Dig Insights on behalf of the National Coffee Association (NCA), affirms coffee’s place in Americans’ daily lives and the popularity that allows coffee to account for eight per cent of the US food service sector.

The data suggests specialty coffee may be driving coffee’s five-year growth trend, with consumption of specialty coffee increasing by nearly 18 per cent  – consumed by 46 per cent of American adults during the past day in January 2025, compared to 39 per cent in 2020.

“Coffee holds a unique place in Americans’ daily lives – no other beverage is such a beloved and prominent touchstone. Coffee’s popularity brews big benefits for American coffee drinkers and the entire US economy, and we expect America’s love affair with coffee to continue for many decades to come,” says Bill Murray, NCA President and CEO.

Other key findings of the report include:

  • At home remains by far the most popular place to prepare coffee.
  • Grocery stores remain the most popular place to purchase coffee, but the number of past-day coffee drinkers who purchased coffee online doubled from 7 per cent in 2020 to 14 per cent in 2025.
  • Drip coffee makers are most prevalent in American households, but single-cup brewers, instant coffee, bean-to-cup machines, and other setups are increasingly popular.
