Neumann Kaffee Gruppe (NKG) is partnering with Satelligence to implement satellite-based deforestation monitoring tools throughout coffee supply chains in Honduras and Uganda.

The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) rules come into force at the end of 2024, and NKG says it will implement the satellite monitoring throughout its supply chain to ensure its exports to the EU meet the regulation’s requirements.

“Satelligence’s expertise in adjusting remote sensing algorithms and map layers has already given our operations in Honduras and Uganda more accurate results without doing extensive surveys on the ground,” says Carolin Ehrensperger, Head of Sustainable Business at NKG.

“We were convinced of starting a partnership with Satelligence as they have a strong track record of tracking deforestation in several commodities.”

Satelligence will provide NKG with near real-time observation of forest loss in and around millions of farms that supply coffee to NKG exporters.

NKG uses this remote sensing data and informative map layers to improve the accuracy of its deforestation mitigation data in Honduras and Uganda, minimising the need for expensive ground surveys.

NKG says its partnership with Satelligence has allowed it to:

  • Provide data that proves its compliance with the EUDR
  • Carry out a jurisdictional risk assessment, to identify high and low risk deforestation areas
  • Complete a Forest Loss Risk Index assessment, allowing NKG to map its supply chains on a pixel-by-pixel basis, rather than by existing farm boundaries
  • Provide Farmer Service Units with relevant alerts about wildfires or other forest loss risks where producers are located
  • Support smallholder inclusion and NKG’s wider sustainability goals, and
  • Gain more control over supply chain data, improving efficiency and saving time.

NKG is a global green coffee service group that operates in 27 countries.

Satelligence is a global ‘nature tech’ company that uses remote sensing technology for sustainable commodity supply chain risk management.
