The annual Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee Day, held on 9 January, was this year marked with the launch of a major replanting and recovery initiative in the Blue Mountain region, observing the theme ‘Rooted in Recovery: Rebuilding Together’.
Aimed at restoring Jamaican coffee farms in regions devastated by Hurricane Melissa in 2025, the event brought together government officials, farmers, industry stakeholders, and more to complete a ceremonial planting exercise.
“At the heart of Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee are our hardworking farmers, and our responsibility is to ensure they are supported as they rebuild and return to full production,” says Agriculture Minister Floyd Green.
According to Dr Norman Grant, President of the Jamaica Coffee Exporters Association (JCEA), Hurricane Melissa destroyed an estimated 100,000 boxes of coffee during the 2025/2026 crop year.
More than 80 per cent of Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee is exported, with Jamaican Government officials stressing that protecting the crop’s reputation is essential to farmer incomes and foreign exchange earnings.
