Starbucks has appointed Mars executive Marika McCauley Sine as its new Global Chief Sustainability Officer.

McCauley Sine will succeed Michael Kobori, who has served as the company’s Chief Sustainability Officer since 2020 and announced his retirement effective at the end of 2024.

In a statement, Kobori expressed gratitude for his team and colleagues, and the corporate, civil society, and government colleagues who have “built Starbucks into a force for sustainability and social justice”.

McCauley Sine joined Mars in 2015 and has served as Chief Sustainability Officer of Mars Petcare since 2020. In this role, she led global sustainability efforts focused on climate action, circular packaging, and sustainable sourcing.

In her new role, McCauley Sine will lead Starbucks’ sustainability initiatives, including the company’s goal of certifying 10,000 Greener Stores globally by 2025, as well as reducing carbon emissions, water usage, and landfill waste by 50 per cent by 2030.

“It will be an honour to lead sustainability for such an impactful business and beloved brand, in collaboration with talented partners and community members around the world,” McCauley Sine said in a statement.

“I am inspired to help advance the Starbucks legacy of doing business with humanity and fostering connection, opportunity, and joy through exceptional coffee.”
