Uganda’s Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) has reported a 77.44 per cent year-on-year rise in coffee export volumes for April 2025, which has resulted in a 152.56 per cent rise in earnings for the same period.

In its Monthly Coffee report – April 2025, the Ministry reported a total export of 694,318 60-kilogram bags of coffee over the course of the month, which generated a total of US$214.38 million in revenue.

The report states strong harvests from multiple regions has been a driver of the increased productivity.

“The monthly coffee export volume was higher than the previous year on account of good crop from the main harvest in Masaka and south Western regions,” the report says.

“The value of coffee exports was higher due to the high global coffee prices as dry conditions in Brazil and Vietnam, the world’s largest producers of Arabica and Robusta coffee respectively, continue to fuel uncertainty of the global coffee industry.”

Much of the increase in Uganda’s year-on-year export volume can be attributed to a huge rise in Robusta exports, with its Arabica exports actually decreasing by 0.8 per cent from April 2024.

Quantity of its Robusta exports soared 104.63 per cent, while value increased 187.61 per cent.

April’s results mark the continuation of a bumper 12-month period for Ugandan coffee exports, with August 2024’s total of 835,681 bags the leading month for the period.

In the 12 months to April 2025, a total of 7.17 million bags worth US$1.97 billion has been exported, compared to 5.90 million bags worth US$1.01 billion between May 2023 and April 2024.

MAAIF says the average price for its coffee in April 2025 was US$5.15 per kilogram, with 68.43 per cent of total export volume was managed by the top 10 exporters, out of 75 total companies.
