Green coffee merchant Volcafe has appointed Raphaelle Peinado as its Sustainability Director effective 1 September 2024.

As part of the role, Peinado will lead and implement the expansion of Volcafe’s strategic global sustainability initiatives to further develop and maintain the company’s green partnerships. She will also work in conjunction with Volcafe’s parent company, ED&F Man Commodities, in implementing the group’s sustainability strategy.

“With a strong emphasis on commercial growth and partnerships, as well as a wealth of experience in project management, I am very confident that Raphaelle will successfully drive our efforts to deliver on our vision of a thriving, sustainable coffee business for all,” says Tim Scharrer, Volcafe Chief Operating Officer and Regional Director Europe and North America.

Raphaelle has more than 12 years of experience in sustainability projects within international organisations and has managed a wide range of programs. In 2017, she joined Sucden, a French independent trading company, where she developed the sustainability strategy of its cocoa department.

“I am very excited to be joining and learning from the Volcafe team. Cocoa and coffee farmers and producing countries face many similar challenges, so I very much look forward to bringing lessons learned from the cocoa sector and adapting them as needed to the context and specific challenges of the coffee sector,” says Peinado.

“I am also thrilled to be working with stakeholders across the coffee supply chain, from farmers to the Volcafe team and our customers, to further the objectives of promoting the resilience of the coffee sector and of contributing to the improvement of the lives of coffee farmers around the world.”

Established in 1851, Volcafe specialises in worldwide green coffee procurement, processing in origin countries and distribution to roaster partners. The company provides access to major coffee producing origins and supplies beans for over 66 billion cups per year.
