Registration is open for the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA)’s 2024/2025 intake on the Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Coffee Excellence course for those interested in applying.

Applications are open until 15 September 2024. The course begins on 30 September and will be based at Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) in the city of Winterthur, Switzerland, but held online.

“This fully online program is designed to be accessible to coffee professionals globally, providing participants unparalleled opportunities for a science-based education in the coffee industry from anywhere in the world. The CEC is dedicated to equipping individuals with an applied sciences foundation in order to build their coffee careers. Join us on the journey towards coffee excellence,” says Head of Continuing Education in Coffee at ZHAW Sabine de Castelberg.

The postgraduate certificate is comprised of three modules and covers coffee production, processing, roasting, grinding, extraction, and sensory evaluation. According to a detailed brief from the SCA, each module is delivered exclusively via distance learning.

The course is available to people with a university degree and at least two years of professional coffee or related field experience. Those without a university degree but who have an SCA Coffee Skills Diploma and at least three years of professional experience can apply for an admission interview.

On completion of all three modules over the course of 15 months, successful applicants will earn 15 credits in the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System and will be awarded a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Coffee Excellence from ZHAW.

ZHAW is also offering online courses for coffee professionals who are interested in specific topics in the syllabus or who want to prepare to take the CAS in Coffee Excellence Course at a later date.

Established in 2021 and developed by researchers at ZHAW’s Coffee Excellence Centre, the CAS in Coffee Excellence is designed to provide coffee professionals with a multidisciplinary overview of applied sciences within the academic world of specialty coffee.

An information event on the program and facility will take place on 22 August from 3pm to 3.45pm CET, followed by an opportunity to ask questions.
